New Zealand Election Results
The 2011 New Zealand election results are in. A few surprises, but over-all nothing that will make any real impact on the way things have been.
Phil Goff lead a Labour party into the ground. As I predicted early on, by not replacing him while there was still time to run an effective campaign Labour admitted defeat. No doubt the few that got in are now fighting for the position of leader of the opposition for three years of easy money.
It would be arrogant for asset sales to go ahead when 80% of the country said they didn’t want it – Phil Goff
There is an interesting statement from the leader (or is it ex leader) of the Labour party. This is the same arrogant party that pushed through civil unions, anti smacking laws, and the like against the wishes of 80% of the population. Given that the Conservative party didn’t make it to parliament we are once again in a position where the voice of the people will be over ruled by our democratically elected dictatorships.
Act paid the price for letting Don Brash buy the party. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Brash then went ahead and alienated his members with some absurd statements like he supported the legalization of marijuana.
Winston Peters is back with an absurd amount of members. Obviously he picked up the protest vote against National that weren’t prepared to give their vote to Phil Goff. And to be fair, Winston is an astute person who always manages to pick up on the hot topics each election year in his campaign. It is a pity that he also never comes good on any of his promises. We won’t hear from him again (except for the odd snide remark) until the next election.
The Green party had a record year, also picking up the protest votes at Labour’s cost. We can look forward to them trying to push through more social engineering and minority policy wasting tax payer money again. Arrogance as Phil Goff would say.
The most telling result was the referendum on the voting system itself. The absurd result where one party (the National party) gained more than half the votes is now being held hostage by a handful of minority parties (we are talking 1- 3 elected members each) to be able to form a government. Yet over half the voters think this is an acceptable system. Granted, the majority of people voted 3 years ago for less politicians and not one of the alternatives this year accommodated those wishes … as Phil Goff would say – it is just arrogance. But that aside, MMP is a joke. Even Phil Goff contradicted himself in the last One News leaders debate when one minute he criticized the system that would allow Act to get in by strategic voting to support National, and two minutes later he was heralding the value of MMP and saying he would vote for no change (well no change kicked him good and hard so there is some justice in that).
What this mean? John Key is free to sell off the countries assets whether we want him to or not. And it will be three years before we get any say in the way we want the country run (which of course will be no say, unless we elect a party who is going to change the system not just the faces running the scam ..err… system).
